I’m an expat Kiwi living in Singapore and had been looking to buy a home in New Zealand for about 18 months. In April this year, I found a beautiful home with superb ocean views for sale by negotiation in Te Ngaere Bay.

I contacted goodGround principal Martin Albrecht and arranged to meet him when we visited NZ. The first thing I can say about both Marty and his Buyers Agent Tim Dow is that they are genuinely nice, honest and sincere people. As soon as Melisa and I met them, we knew we had made the right decision engaging them to act on our behalf.
They’re very friendly, easy to talk to, they listen and they know what they’re talking about without being pushy or trying to over-sell. In short, they are the complete opposite of a lot of real estate agents.
They way goodgGound buyers agents work is simple. You tell them where you want to live, what type of home you’d like to buy and roughly what want to pay. They then go and find a selection of homes that meet your criteria. This can be in any city, town or district in NZ.
Once they find a home you like, they write a comprehensive market analysis report just for you and basically build up a comprehensive case to negotiate a better price for the home on your behalf based on facts not emotion.
Quite simply, their job is to get you the buyer the best deal possible. They’re working for you, not the sellers as opposed to the vendors agent who is working to get them the best price.
After the house settled, I paid them a fee based on the savings I made. Goodground also took care of all the due diligence, arranged all the reports I needed and generally did all the running around I couldn’t do up here in Singapore. Eventually they ended up saving me $50,000 (after fees).

Buying a house is certainly one of the hardest things to do…
First you need:
- to get to know your new town – in my case, Whangarei.
- to get to know your bank manager very well.
- listen, listen and listen to the advice from your kind and caring mortgage broker.
- and then – you just have to find a house – within that budget…
The first person I met at an Open Home before moving to Whangarei happened to be Jennifer Starr. Back in Auckland, and feeling quite worried, I impulsively phoned this lady. (I guess even after meeting her briefly, her professionalism stood out). I didn’t actually know what I wanted to ask Jennifer…..…this was more a “lament”, I think. Jennifer – to make a very long story short – went out of her way to help me find a house. I have no idea how many houses she has shown me, how many phone calls and e-mails we have exchanged… but suffice to say LOTS.!
My answers to “What kind of house are you looking for? What do you want? What is important to you?” have changed so many times. And somewhere – I don’t know when – Jennifer understood exactly what I needed, because she really got who I was…….And let me tell you,that is not so easy. Her desire to fit the house and buyer perfectly, has really impressed me. For me, it’s the perfect match!
When I at times, felt a exhausted just by the very idea of house hunting; Jennifer would sense it even before I realised it myself. She would let me be…… Just to catch my breath.
The lovely end to this rather long story is that Jennifer has now helped me find my own Tree House (in conjunction with Northland Real Estate) – the ideal spot for me. Not only have I found a house I love, but I feel that I have made a lifelong friend.
